Homeschooling and Exemption Forms
Under Connecticut General Statute 10-184, a parent may remove a child from public school for purposes of homeschooling if "the parent or person having control of such child is able to show that the child is elsewhere receiving equivalent instruction in the studies taught in the public schools."
Connecticut General Statute 10-184 states that all parents are responsible for ensuring that their children receive instruction in the following required subjects:
- Reading, writing, spelling, and English grammar;
- Geography;
- Arithmetic;
- United States history, and citizenship, including a study of the town, state, and federal governments.
For parents who may wish to return a child to public school, consideration should be given to ensuring that homeschool course work aligns with the Connecticut State Graduation Requirements. Parents may choose to provide instruction, hire someone else to do so, or choose an online option. It should be noted that the Connecticut State Department of Education does not accredit any of the online/virtual schools.
If you choose to return your child to public school at any time, records of homeschooling will be requested and reviewed for placement in the proper grade. In the absence of any records, testing may be required for proper educational placement.
If your child is between the ages of 7 and 16 and is going to be homeschooled, please complete and submit the Notice of Intent Form. Please complete this form within 10 days of beginning your homeschooling program.
If you are removing your child from the Shelton Public School System to homeschool, it is very important that you formally withdraw them from the school system using the form listed below.
If your child is 5 or 6 years of age please complete and submit the “Acknowledgement of Option to Exempt Attendance” Form; the “Notice of Intent Form” is not needed.
