Standards

 What is a standard?

The Shelton Public School system uses a district-wide standards-aligned report card for students in Grades K-6.  The format of the report card defines clusters of standards for each grade, and trends how well students are progressing to meet curriculum standards over the course of the school year.

A Standard is a statement that defines what all public school students in Connecticut should understand and be able to do in core curriculum areas (English Language Arts, Math).  Learning standards for each academic content area and grade span are identified in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  These can be viewed online at the following websites:

Connecticut Department of Education or at Core Standards

What is the purpose of a standards-aligned report card?

The purpose of the standards-aligned report card is to provide feedback to parent/guardians regarding the progress a student is making toward specific learning standards at their grade level.  Shelton’s standards-aligned report card provides parents and students with an understanding of end-of-year expectations.

The standards are clearly defined in content area curricula and reported by cluster on the report card at each grade level.

With the official adoption to the National Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the standards are clearly defined and integrated on the report card at each grade level.  For more detailed information regarding grade level and content specific information visit the following websites: CT Department of Education or Core Standards

How are these grade level standards marked?

The K-6 standards-aligned report card includes specific clusters of standards relating to the knowledge and skills a student should meet by the end of the school year.  It uses a reporting scale to reflect your student’s progress toward meeting each cluster of standards at the end of the school year. (See scale and rubric below)

Beginning in 5th grade, in addition to content area standards, students recieve a report card that includes an overall numeral grade per content area.
